Review #8: Kincaid's Hamburgers - Fort Worth, Texas

Since the very first time I started discussing the TexasBurgerGuy concept with people - EVERY person I spoke to said I had to try Kincaid's in Fort Worth. They claimed it was hands down the best burger joint in Texas. That is a mighty bold statement. Obviously with such high expectations, I was prepared for a royal letdown. I am happy to report that Kincaid's definitely lived up to at least part of the expectations. They do have without a doubt the most unique atmosphere I have EVER witnessed in visiting various burger joints. I'll talk more about this later. As for the burger... mmm mama... it was a big, thick, juicy, 2-handed monster that made me remember why I enjoy travelling around the state enjoying mom and pop burger joints.

IMPORTANT: If you haven't already, please read the Texas Burger Guy terminology post. That will help you understand this review.

Kincaid's Cheeseburger Review
Almost the entire TexasBurgerGuy family made the trip to Kincaid's located just west of downtown Fort Worth. As we approached the restaurant - I was shocked at the amount of cars parked outside. I was sure we were in for an hour wait just to sit down. My step brother jokingly said that they move you in and out of this place like cattle at a stockyard. Well - he was on the money. They do feed you like you are at a stockyard which makes Kincaid's a one of a kind in my mind. Not only is the restaurant itself a one of a kind - but when my burger arrived - I discovered that the atmosphere was just the opening act for what proved to be a very enjoyable burger eating experience. Here is how I see the Kincaid's Cheeseburger ranking in the TexasBurgerGuy categories:

Oooze Factor
Once my burger arrived and I had unwrapped it from the paper it was wrapped in - I opened up the bun to take a look under the hood as it were. I wanted to catch a peek of the patty and the inner workings of the burger. I spotted a fair amount of ooze all around the bun, vegetables and especially the patty. The sheer size of the patty made me a little bit nervous. I was worried that with the patty being as big as this one was that it would surely be dried out in parts of the patty. Well - all that worrying came to an end when I took my first bite. The patty was very moist. It wasn't too moist in that the bun was all "ooozed out" or anything like that. It was just fine in the oooze category. Pretty good oooze!
Oooze Factor Rating: 8

Herd Killer
Seeing as how we were in Fort Worth - just a few miles from the Fort Worth Stockyards - I was going to be really depressed if Kincaid's had a little weak looking patty. Man oh man - this thing was by no means a weak patty. Halfway through the burger I stopped and almost took another picture to share with you all the size of the patty. It had to be an inch thick in the middle of that thing. I had never thought about this - but another important attribute is slopage. That is where the patty is thin on the outside to kindof draw the eater in to the middle where the real meat is. This burger had slopage - no doubt. It is safe to say that more than a few cattle mosied on down the road from the stockyards and were placed between 2 buns at Kincaids! Great herd killer burger!!!
Herd Killer Rating: 9

Handling
I wish I had gotten an "aerial view" shot on the burger so that you could fully appreciate the size. It isn't a one handed burger. Definitely a full 2 handed burger and then some.
Handling Rating: 7

Bling Bling
This category is where this burger really shines. This bad boy of a burger was just $3.85!!! I left Kincaid's feeling like I had easily trimmed off 3 days of my life for a very small amount of money! Where else can you die sooner and still keep some money in your pocket!!! WOO HOO!! Absolutely one of the best values out there - hands down!!
Bling Bling Rating: 9

Restaurant Review
Kincaid's other menu items were pretty good. We tried the Chili Cheeseburger, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Grilled Cheese, Onion rings, and the fries. Fries were plain ore-ida style fries. Nothing really special. The Onion rings were good and greasy. They were the "soft and slippery" kind of onion. Mrs. TexasBurgerGuy really liked them. I thought they were pretty good myself. I had a bite of the Chili Cheeseburger and it was pretty awesome!! Meat on more meat with cheese.... oh yeah - my heart is just hating me but the burger was good. All in all - I didn't eat anything that I didn't like at Kincaid's.

Restaurant/Atmosphere
My step brother was driving and he said before we left that it was easy to drive right by Kincaid's and not even see it. He was right about that as we drove right past Kincaid's. Once we arrived and made our way into Kincaid's - I got very excited. I knew immediately that I was in for a very unique dining experience. Kincaid's is very unique in that they offer stand up eating. There are 3 rows of stand up tables which I think are not really tables - it is really the stock room for the restaurant with tables mounted on top. In the front there are several picnic tables with more picnic tables on the far wall. We went to Kincaid's around 1 pm on a Saturday and there were LOTS of people there. We had to stand and I am actually very glad we had to because I feel we got to experience the uniqueness of Kincaid's by standing and eating. I highly recommend it when you go. **TBG Warning** You don't want to go to Kincaid's while they are busy if you are any of the following: anti-social, snob, suffer from Agoraphobia (fear of waiting in lines), not from Texas, or suffer from BO. You have to go into this place ready to rub shoulders with your fellow Texans. All in all a one of a kind dining experience I won't soon forget.

Directions
Since I am not from Fort Worth - I am going to have to direct you to the map below to find your way. All I can tell you is get on I-30 West of Fort Worth and take the Camp Bowie exit and go north. It will be on your right.

Address/Phone:

TBG Overall Rating
Overall a VERY good burger in an unforgettable environment. I had heard all the talk but nothing beats being there yourself. Now I understand why everybody raves about this place. Do yourself a favor and make the trip to Kincaid's. You won't soon forget it.

You've made me homesick (not to mention hungry!) for some good ol' Texas beef! The closest thing I can get to a decent burger around here is TGI Fridays, so that must be saying something about English burgers!

Great site! I've given you a mention on my blog, and I'll definitely keep checking back!

You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can't take Texas out of the girl!

Except for the body odor I fit all of the above criteria, so I suppose I will have to pass. Ah, well.

Mr. Kincaid was a childhood hero of mine, although I never met him. Let me explain. In the late 1950's- early 1960's, my abandoned my mother and us three kids. Mother worked at menial jobs while she put herself through business school at night. Many times when she put food on the table, she gave thanks for Mr. Kincaid at Kincaid Grocery Store for extending credit to her so she could feed the kids. Please pass this on to the Kincaid family.

All I can say is WOW Chenoah. That is very touching story. When I send the Kincaid's review to Mr. Kincaid, I will certainly include your comments in the letter.

Well good grief, I left out the word "father" in my post, but I guess you figured that out! He was gone for three years, and they divorced in 1962. He had been in Las Vegas, but he stayed in Ft. Worth for several more years after the divorce. Both parents are gone now. ANYWAY, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I hadn't thought of Mr. Kincaid's kindness in years!

Kincaid's Hamburgers, located at 4901 Camp Bowie Blvd, Fort Worth, Texas, is
still as good as ever. The Fort Worth location's hours, which changed on
4 October 2004, are now 11 AM to 8 PM, Monday thru Saturday (closed Sunday).
If you would like to call you order in, their phone number is +1 817 732-2881.
Their hamburgers are made with USDA choice, all natural organic beef, which is
ground fresh every day. The regular hamburgers are 1/2 pound, while the
Jr. hamburgers are 1/4 pound. Their hamburgers are made with mustard, lettuce,
pickle, and onion, unless you tell them otherwise when you order. For example,
I normally order my Cheeseburger plain and dry, i.e. nothing on it at all.

There is now another Kincaid's Hamburgers in Southlake, Texas at 100 N. Kimball
Ave. The Southlake location's hours are 11 AM to 9 PM, Monday thru Saturday,
and 11 AM to 6 PM on Sunday. You can call in your order to +1 817 416-2573.
The prices are the same, and, while we haven't eaten there yet, I'm confident
the food tastes identical (i.e. good) to that served at the Fort Worth location.

Hi...I am in my first trimester of pregnancy and I can't stop thinking about cheeseburgers. I was googling the best burger and came across your site..thanks for sharing! I am a big Kincaid's fan...Fort Worth...my husband has only eaten at the Southlake joint...he wasn't impressed. I hear it hasn't done the original proud.

I grew up in Fort Worth and never ate at Kincaid's. Were were visiting there last Christmas and I finally tried one of their burgers. Boy was I disappointed. The meat had absolutely no taste and $3.25 for a bottle of beer is rediculous.

Coming from the B-B-Q capitol of Texas (Lockhart), I know beef and love hamburgers. Kincaid's is hands down the best hamburger in Texas.

Kincaid's is definitely the best in Fort Worth, hands down.

Next time you're in the FW area don't miss Charlie's Old Fashion Hamburgers. I'd rate them second only to Kincaid's. There are two locations, one on Granbury Road (near I-20) and the other on Alta Mere (near the circle). They do a long list of burger variations but their plain ol' fashion is still my favorite. Don't just call your cardiologist with one of these bad boys... bring him along!

Kincaid's in Southlake tastes just like the Camp Bowie location. Good burger, but NOT the best in Texas...

I want to put a word in for the now-closed Jim's Hamburgers in Arlington on Division. He was forced to close September 2005 to make room for a parking lot. My friend and I drove 20 miles from our office job (one way) for lunch at Jim's 3 days that week!

Best burger, not just in Texas, but in the country. Half-pound sirloin, fried with some kind of Korean salt/msg/mystery seasoning, grilled onions came stock, and the cheese was melted to liquid when it came to the table. I remember washing my hands AFTER eating!! Hand-cut fries, and outdoor picnic tables for the times when the 4 booths couldn't hold the crowds too...

Any time we eat a crappy restaurant burger, we think back to the "good ole days" when we could get a Jim's, fries, and a Coke for $5.75!!

Just reading about Kincaid's brings back fond memories and uncontrollable episodes of involuntary hypersalivation!! While a graduate student in Fort Worth a few years back we would drive across town at lunchtime several times a week for these great burgers. Crowded but worth it at lunchtime.

I gotta agree with Maverick. Jim's in Arlingon had the best flavor of any burger around. I think the "Korean mystery seasoning", as he put it, was mostly salt and pepper, but what ever it was, it definitely made the their burger stand out. I'm sorry to hear the place closed down (the good ones always seem to close, I miss Austin's GM steak house on the Drag too). I haven't been to Arlington in years....

My husband and I saw the special on food network channel and was looking for the place that was near 610 and 59 that sold the buffalo burgers.

Kinkaid's is the best burger I've ever had. And the wait to sit down is long, but I've never sat down there before. You stand and eat your burger like a man.

Maverick was right on the money about Jim's Burgers in Arlington, Texas .... Hell, eevn Channel 5 was out there on the day that they closed to video all of the people coming for their last Jim's Burger .... Luckily, I work close by and ate there frequently and in the last week of business. I made it a point to eat their for every lunch that week ..... I'm sure that I must have shortened my life by a few years but it was worth it.
They said that they might open another one but guaranteed they could NEVER reproduce the taste unless they brought along that 1950's grill ..... that place was a hoot. They had checks that had bounced stapled to the walls that were so covered in grease that the printing had been washed away.
Damn, I miss those Jim's Burgers .... Thanks, Maverck for the reminder.

I agree with the other posters. Jims Hamburgers is by far the best burger. That meat was so juicy with great flavor. The burger was also big in size. Did this establishment open anywhere else? The wife had stated that they were going to open at another location but did not know where yet.

At 7:46 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I found a pretty good alternative to Jim's just north of 183 on Story in Irving -- Burger Island! $6.93 for a combo, big, juicy burgers and hand-cut fries, and free refills on the foam-cup Cokes...

Not quite as consistent as Jim's, but I've never had a bad burger there.

This place isn't that good. In fact its average at best and WAY over priced. Almost 10 bucks for a burger fries and a drink in a place that has crappy seating. Screw this. Go to Tommy's down the street, way better. You fail at rating burgers

At 11:54 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kincaid's is good, alright, but there are far better alternatives.

If you want a GREAT burger, slide out to Jacksboro and grab one at Herd's. Claude doesn't offer anything but burgers, chips and a soda.

His place is truly a mom and pop shop. In fact, he doesn't even have a phone and only takes cash.

You won't be disappointed.

Kincaids is good, but Herd's in Jacksboro is great! Texas Burger Guy, you've got to try it. They're open Tuesday - Saturday from 10:30 - 4:00. It's about two blocks north of the courthouse on 281/114. It's on the left. If you get to the Green Frog, you've gone too far.

I love Kincaids burgers! They recently opened one in my town, Southlake. The worst part: they close early on Sunday nights!!! I always forget this.

I def. recommend Kincaids to anyone in the DFW area!!!

I was searching for Jim's before I found out that it was closed and discovered that there is a little gas station on Division St called Speed Mart nearby Jim's old location that seems to have resurrected that old Jims memory. The menu has a speciality "Ron" burger at "Chin's Kitchen." Not sure what the history of that is, but the burger is very flavorfulis definitely worth a try.

Kincaids is simply of those places where you mouth waters on the drive over there. Frankly, this is the best burger I have ever eaten! They are building one in my town, Weatherford (20 miles west of Fort Worth) and I can't wait! Kincaids is a must for any burger enthusiast.

I've experienced ambrosia at Kincaids (the original) at the Camp Bowie store. The best hamburger, service, atmosphere.

Monday my sister and I went to your newest store in Arlington and had the worst experience. The food took 45 mintues (uncrowded at the time). Rob said her hamburger was great but the fries were cold. My hot dog wasn't even average and the onion rings were nearly black and difficult to eat.
Conclusion, she won't try the good store now.

Folks, you'd better do something.

I moved to texas when I was 10 im 26 now. I had my first Kincaids when I was 13. While this was a really good burger still not the best I would have. Kincaids has alot of history and the owner (father) said that he would never expand. Kincaids would always be a single place to eat. Well this has been true and he kept his word and took it to the grave with him. He has passed some time in the last year or two. I always make a point to go get a good burger when im close by to a place that isnt close to my house. This was the same with kincaids. While a good burger not worth the 3o min drive just to get one. Once Mr Kincaid passed his sons received the business. They apparently had plans in the works for a while to expand once he had passed. I didnt even know they had already started to this untill I saw we were getting one in Arlington. I was thrilled beyond a doubt to be getting once so close due to the fact that the two best places in Arlington had recently closed down. Jim's has mentioned before and JC's Burgers... It was nice to see I was gonna have a GOOD replacement for my bi weekly burger cravings. We waited and waited and waited for the new one to open here in Arlington. Then the day finally came I ran out as soon as I found out it was opened to go get dinner for the family. 6 burgers 4 fries 2 onion rings damn near 50 bucks. I can not tell you how dissapointed I was in what I was putting in my mouth that had a kincaids name on it. It was absoultly horrible. So bad that I didnt even finish all of mine. This is exactly why Mr Kincaid told me in our conversation once when I asked him about expanding why he said he wouldnt. I am only one man and while you can teach others to do your work they can never come close to perfection as you can. To the BOYS. Im sorry that greed got a hold of you and that felt the need to run the name of a good burger into the ground. You have done a sorry job at protecting the name of a burger your father had created and kept save for so long. The new Kincaids are NO MORE. Not worth the money and not worth the Taste. While you may earn the business of a few new guys that havent had the pleasure of tasting a true Kincaids in Arlington Heights so you have lost the business and respect of all your fathers loyal customers for years. While the one in Ft worth may still tast the same the taste of the others have forever left my taste buds disappointed...

Now for JIMS BURGERS..

OMG I could kill the city of Arlington for making them close... I think if you have to put a business out on the street to make room for a parking lot or to widen the street then you need to be doing something to be helping then get into a new building. While JIMS was not the largest or cleanest burger place around it was one of the best. Just thinking about it would make your mouth water like the juices running off the patty. The seasoning was a true orginal and while there fries were not much to desire it didnt matter cause you didnt go there for them anyways... At 25 cents a refill who Cares. It may be the only place left on earth that charges 1.00 for a flat fountain drink and 25 cents for refill but it didnt matter cause all you could taste was that burger anyways. Jim truely left you happy and full. You can taste that burger in your mouth the moment you set your mind to go get one and the flavor will last with your for hours to Follow. You will truly be missed.

Now JC'S BURGERS.

I am honestly suprised that no one has mentioned it. Especially you guys from Arlington. This is another establishment that was owned by the Asian Creation. While The Chengs who were ti knew the owners of Jims who were korean it was a burger thing with them. Two couples who slaved away at their business day and night to keep us fed and happy.

Jc's is another unique burger. While I worked there has a teenager I fell in love with this place. You got a free burger for every shift you worked. While I gained several pounds just from working there it was sersiously a burger you could eat daily with out getting tired off. Another unique seasoning the was used on the burgers and hand cut fries that was mixed up in the back store room with the door closed and locked that not only would she not tell the customers but not even her loyal employees. When she was mixing it up you would think she was doing drug manufacturing in there lol. Door closed locked and lights off. If you tried to open the door to get somthing she would send you away untill she was done.. From the buttered and grilled buns to the crispy bacon and the never under grilled onions. With homemade Ranch dressing that couldnt be beat. It didnt matter if it was the lunch rush or the firday and Saturday night lunch rush you always saw familiar faces that continued to return as loyal customers to get the burger with the style of their choice. It got to the point to where I could see you walk in know what you wanted and have it called in to make and your order rung up on the register and all you had to do was pay. Sadly greed got the best of them as well and when they raised their prices just a little bit it came back to bite them in the butt. Now why you could still get a combo for less then 6 bucks this had been the price for many many years. Even though they only raised prices slightly by about 20 cents to adjust food cost it really but a hurt on them. While the loyal customers didnt realize they were being charged more is why they were being charged more they thought it was pure greed. 20 cents isnt anything to gripe about but it was the fact that you could walk in for years with a 5 dollar bill and single and get a nickle back and now they had to caugh up two more dimes or and extra dollar and lug around the spare change... They soon closed after about 6 months of extremely slow lunches and slow friday and Saturday night dinners.

Its really sad to see the good ones go. JC'S was the only burger place that you could have delivered to your door and with no delivery charge.

To the great establishments with a desired taste. Dont be greedy dont let money get the best of you. If you have loyal following and a great product dont go changing it. Even price. If you get shafted for a few more cents just eat it. Your customers might start going some place else (sadly).

One Last note to any owners that may be lurking. If you are going to offer bacon which you should. Bacon is suppose to be crispy and crunchy and break off everytime you bite it. Not chewy and soggy and under cooked to where when yo bite into your burger you have to pull the entire strip of bacon out along with everything inside. Cook it right or dont cook it at all.

I came all the way from England so that a Texas friend could take me to Kincaid's - he'd told me about it on a visit to London. It was all, and more than,it was cracked up to be - well worth the journey!

By the way, agoraphobia is a fear of open spaces - not something you'll find much of in Kincaid's at lunchtime! Agora is Ancient Greek for "marketplace".

Being new to Texas and a big fan of burger joints, I was excited to find this site. But after giving Kincaid's a fair shot(3 visits), you've lost all credibility with me. The burgers are consistent, but consistently average. They're bland, a little on the dry side, the toppings are chintzy, served with crinkle-cut Ore-Ida fries. I think most people who claim to like Kincaid's do so because they want to like it. It's a homespun mom and pop shop, with a storied history, stuck in the middle of an upscale neighborhood. But as far as the burgers, I can honestly make a better one at home.
I would encourage you to try Kincaid's again. In my opinion, a fair review requires at least 2 visits.
The true measure of a great burger is how you reflect on it. It's not whether you enjoyed it at that moment; It's how much you look forward to having another one. And I have no desire to return to Kincaid's.

JIM'S HAMBURGER - is by far the BEST burger in the world (or at least the 40+ countries I've been to) - I remember going there for the first time with my Dad back when his Toyota dealership was on Division - I remember the red duct tape keeping the red booths together & seeing grease stuck to everything - but those thoughts fade, as well as my skepticism that a Korean couple made the best old fashioned burger in the world on a 1950s area cooktop, BUT IT WAS MAGIC! The Wall Street Journal can keep its Harvard Square Mr. Bartley's, because Jim's had the juiciest most well season burgers in all of the land. I remember in the summers when there son would work there as well & I believe he wound up with a Ivy League education funded by his parent's genius mastery of the perfect burger. I moved away and I was sadly there in Aug 2005 for a weekend and continue to kick myself for not having 1 last Jim's Burger & flat Dr. Pepper. I heard he was going to open up a place near the new Cowboy stadium, but alas I don't believe the rumors are true. Please let us know if you have had any Jim spottings - I would LOVE another burger & I am sure we could find him a similar cook surface on E-Bay if that is what it would take. As for Kincaid's, it is OKAY. I would pay 5xs more & drive 100 miles for a Jim's Burger & for perspective I would eat at Kincaid's if it didn't take any effort...

Yesterday I went to the Heritage Trace location. This was my first time to any of the Kincad's locations. It did not live up to the hype. The hamburger was average, somewhat on the dry side with little flavor. With a couple of sides the bill was $10.00. That is pretty steep for an average hamburger.

Just had a Kincaid's cheeseburger for the first time since the 1980's. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed. I went to the new location in Weatherford. To the folks that think the price is high, they obviously haven't eaten out in a long while. The McDonalds Angus burger costs more than Kincaid's. To the folks that think it's tasteless, I'm sure they don't know what a good burger is, muchless, a great one...Alan

I think when it comes to Kincaid's, you HAVE to go to the Camp Bowie location to get the great burger that continuously wins awards. The new locations don't have the same 'flavor' the original does. Maybe it's because the cooks at the original are the same and maintain the original methods, even though Mr. Kincaid passed a while back.

I agree with the praise for Fred's Cafe and Tommy's Burgers, as well. They are both great burger joints who have rivaled against the Kincaid's burger for decades. My dad was a fan of the Tommy's Junkyard Burger! Good stuff!

I haven't been to Jake's, Lili's Bistro, or the new chain, Mooyah's yet, but intend to give them all a try when I get back to the States. I'm a HUGE burger fan and these three places have gotten some mega-hype since I left Fort Worth.

I'm so happy to have found this blog! Thanks, Texas Burger Guy! You've made my mouth water! And you've inspired me to crank up the grill and make my OWN burgers and fries for dinner tonight!

I've heard of Kincaid's Hamburger for a long time so my wife and I tried the Grapevine location 7/09/10. I have never been so disappointed in any meal. The meat was dry without any seasoning. The bun was soggy and fell apart when eating. I was expecting a good old fashioned hamburger. I think a Whataburger is much better.

My son Evan and I just moved to FW, and have been looking for good places to eat. When I read your blog about Kincaid, we had to go try a burger ourselves. They are delicious, the best burger I've ever had! You might think i'm exaggerating, but its really that good. I also loved the atmosphere and their service was great. Thanks for putting this place on my favorite list.

I have no problem with people picking Booches, but I’ve gotta say … at this point, if I could only choose one burger to have for the rest of my life, it would be the Flat Branch burger (the one with chokes & cheese on top). It is ridiculous.

I have to agree with the folks above, Please come back Jim's. There is was no where better for a great juicy hamburger. Every place else I have been including Kincaid's, is just average.
